WATERSHED MAPS

What watershed do you live in?

A watershed, according to the EPA is “…the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. ”  As you can see on the map, Barrington has many watersheds!
Water from the Nippo, Isinglass, Long Pond, and Axe Handle Brook watersheds all eventually flow into the Cochecho River, which joins the Salmon Falls River to form the Piscataqua.  The Piscataqua forms the boundary between New Hampshire and Maine and flows into the Atlantic north of Portsmouth.
The Bean and Little River watersheds contribute to the Lamprey River, whose watershed extends as far west as Candia and as far south as Fremont.  This water enters Great Bay between Durham and Newmarket.  It supplies drinking water for several downstream communities.
The Bellamy and Oyster Rivers each originate in Barrington, and enter the northern section of Great Bay.  The Oyster River provides drinking water for Durham and UNH, and the Bellamy is the main contributor to the large reservoir in Madbury that provides water for Portsmouth.
